In 1872/73, while the railway line was being extended through
the Neckar Valley to Würzburg, it was decided to provide
a stop at Karls Gate so residents of the Old Town would
have better access to rail services. The station building
erected at that time was replaced with a much larger structure
in 1934/36.
Later it was temporarily used as an office building by the
city government, and since 1995 it has housed the cultural
center Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof. The former
station was completely remodeled, turning its hall, station
restaurant, waiting room and offices into a large auditorium
with stage and foyer, a movie theater, a culture bar, and
other rooms for holding events.
